Earth Charter Booklet

Currently, Planit is focusing all its efforts on promoting the Earth Charter. The Earth Charter is a statement of common values and principles meant to serve as a code of conduct and guide people, communities, organisations and nations towards ecologically sustainable living.

The Earth Charter was drawn up by thousands of community members, groups and experts in relevant fields (eg, ethics, science, international law) from all over the world working together for ten years. Coordinated by the International Earth Charter Commission, the document was launched on 28 June 2000, designed to serve as:
  • a people's charter
  • a UN document for ratification by all nations in the General Assembly, and
  • the basis of a new international legal covenant.
Planit is the official Western Australian contact for the Earth Charter, working in association with Earth Charter Australia to promote the endorsement and use of the Earth Charter at all levels of Australian society, including:
  • local government
  • organisations and political parties
  • community groups
  • individuals
WHAT CAN I DO?
Endorsements from individuals and groups are being collected to show the governments of the UN General Assembly that the Earth Charter has broadscale support in all sectors of society around the globe. This will help gain UN endorsement, giving the Earth Charter similar clout as the International Bill of Human Rights. Therefore, Planit urges you to read the Charter and then, if appropriate, endorse it online (organisations need to get agreement from their board or committee first).

Closer to home, a great way to find out how to live more lightly on the Earth is to measure your ecological footprint and see which of your lifestyle choices are putting the greatest pressure on our world. Measure your ecological footprint using the Earth Day Footprint Quiz.
